Route: Highway 1 Big Sur, California
This portion of Highway 1 follows the rugged coastline in central California on the Beautiful Carmel to Big Sur. The route is famous for its spectacular views of the rocky cliffs and offers a view of the foam-flecked waves of the Pacific, breaking on the stunning dark rocks. The track consists of a blend of sweeping curves, straight lines and some challenging corners, especially the view of the endless ocean will help to ensure that you want this road to travel often.
The Big Sur Coast (between San Simeon on the south end and Carmel-by-the-Sea on the north end) is the most beautiful, exciting and romantic section of Highway No. 1. “Big Sur is where mountains meet the ocean in a dramatic rendezvous. This road has be said to be one of the most beautiful meeting of land and sea that there are on earth.” These two sentences, the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, the suggestions here for his book.
The two-lane Highway No. 1 winds on this 120km stretch of coastline cliffs up to then suddenly fall into the dark forest ravines. West of the Highway, the water shimmers sky blue and further out dark blue, and east of it there are forests with giant coast redwood trees in the Santa Lucia Range , encountered some of the Pacific Ocean. Therefore there is a direct access to the beaches only a few points. On the beaches and coves there are more sea lions as surfers and swimmers because the water is usually too cold and the current is in many places too dangerous. But if only the many viewpoints along Highway No. 1 give enough attention to the sensational coastline freely, and you will be almost forced to stop at each viewpoint to enjoy the different perspectives of the rugged coastline can.
